I. ASSESSMENT

We guide clients through all phases of the assessment and targeting process, including:

  • Evaluating your current situation, goals, and priorities
  • Assessing your skills, strengths, and weaknesses through online assessments and written exercises
  • Establishing and exploring initial career targets

Below are some examples of the tools we may recommend for clients who wish to explore their future career direction. It is not necessary to use all these tools, however, and if you have completed other online assessments and/or written exercises, they may well serve as a good substitute for some of these tools.

Background Questionnaire(s)

We suggest that all new clients complete the First Appointment Questionnaire, and we recommend that clients who are interested in assessment also complete the Supplemental Client Background Form. These help us to learn not just about your career and life aspirations, but also your responsibilities and constraints so that we can help you most effectively.

Written Exercises

We often recommend clients complete one or more written exercises from the classic book Targeting a Great Career, such as the:

  • Seven Stories Exercise
  • Fifteen and Forty Year Vision Exercise
  • Brainstorming All Possible Careers Exercise.

Online Assessments

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI)

The MBTI is a self-report questionnaire for understanding one’s preferences and personality. The MBTI is used by 79% of Fortune 100 companies and has been taken by over 50 million people, making it the world’s most widely-used assessment instrument. Please click here for more information.

Strong Interest Inventory

We recommend the Strong Interest Inventory® (Strong) to those who have recently graduated as well as clients who wish to look at their career options from scratch. Strong is a self-report questionnaire used to measure and describe people’s interests in a broad range of occupations, work and leisure activities and educational subjects.  Please click here for more information.

II. TARGETING

During the targeting process we look at your assessment results/career aspirations (from the processes above), work experience (resume), and financial needs, and help you to come up with some realistic job targets to explore.

We then explain why you should – and show you how to – talk to people in your desired field before you finalize your target and start interviewing. We also explain why every job hunter benefits from a fairly narrow, very specific first choice job target and why this is particularly important for job hunters who are changing job functions or industries.

We will give you specific guidance and tools to help you to:

  • Assess your initial targets and knowledge of target areas
  • Explore your job target(s) and make an initial selection
  • Familiarize yourself with your job target to optimize your interviewing strength
  • Use that knowledge to clarify and define your final job target
